Summer 2012: Arts and Crafts Specialist at Camp Hidden Valley of the Fresh Air Fund. Co-created and co-taught engaging, adaptable lessons to campers ages 8-12 of all ability levels.
Dreamcatchers.
Campers explored the creation of dreamcatchers through "A Story of a Dreamcatcher". Through this tale, campers listened, discussed and discovered the meanings and symbols to the dreamcatchers. Campers were then given a paper plate, string, feathers, and beads to begin the creation of their own dreamcatcher. The results were outstanding and the campers could not wait to hang them above their beds.
Dream Journals
Continuing to explore the idea of dreams, campers then created their own simple journals. We discussed how journals are used in multiple ways some may use it to record their dreams, while other use it to sketch or reflect.
Campers made these journals all own their own by using cardboard and string for binding. We marbleized paper, created our own paper with pulp, and then created individualized name cards.
Abstracted Bodies
Campers explored the world of abstraction in this lesson. Campers partnered up and while one camper laid on a piece of paper in an awesome pose, the other camper traced. After the first partner was traced the camper switched places and laid on top of the first tracing but in a different pose. Once they were traced the student assigned each of their bodies a color. Once their body colors were decided the campers decided together was color the places where their bodies overlapped would be. After abstracted figures were painted and but out, campers learned about a way to create their own glue using flour, water, and heat. Once the paste was made all campers came together to piece their figures together on a large canvas.
